On Sunday 14th September, the Mayor of Swaffham, Cllr Lindsay Beech, attended a special service at St Cuthbert’s Church in Thetford to mark the 85th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

Cllr Beech was joined by fellow Swaffham Councillor, Cllr Paul Darby, and welcomed the opportunity to pay tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of “The Few” whose courage shaped the course of history.

The commemorative service was also attended by the Mayor of Thetford, Cllr Carla Barreto, the High Sheriff of Norfolk, Patrick Lines, and the MP for Southwest Norfolk, Terry Jermy.

Speaking after the service, Cllr Beech said:
“It was an honor to be part of this poignant occasion and to stand alongside colleagues, dignitaries, and the local community in remembering those who served during the Battle of Britain. Their courage, resilience and sacrifice should never be forgotten.”

The Battle of Britain remains one of the most significant events of the Second World War, symbolising the determination and spirit of those who defended the nation in 1940. Services such as this ensure that their legacy continues to inspire future generations.
