Residents are invited to an engaging and informative evening at Swaffham Library on Friday 29 May at 7.30pm, as Swaffham Library Friends present “Beyond the Runway”.

This special talk, delivered by Colin Yorke, will uncover the fascinating and often overlooked story of the RAF’s Air Sea Rescue service. While many are familiar with the achievements of RAF pilots during the Second World War, fewer know that the RAF also operated a fleet of rescue boats that played a vital role in saving lives at sea.

The talk will explore the dramatic history of these high-speed rescue launches, whose crews were responsible for saving over 14,000 airmen during the war. Operating in dangerous conditions, including the heavily contested waters known as “Spitfire Alley,” these crews risked their lives to recover downed fighter and bomber crews.

A particular focus of the evening will be the story of one such vessel, MA/SB S32, which served for four years during the war. The talk will also highlight an ambitious modern-day effort to recover and restore this historic craft from its watery resting place, helping to preserve and honour the legacy of the brave men who served aboard these vessels.

Tickets for the event are £5, and advance booking is essential. Refreshments will be available on the night, with donations welcomed.
