A total of nine transformer movements will take place, and each unit will be transported on a 28-axle girder frame trailer, capable of carrying loads up to 350 tonnes.
The trailer will reach a maximum length of 85 metres, a width of 5.4 metres and a height of 5.2 metres. Due to these abnormal dimensions, the convoy will travel under full police escort and at a strictly limited speed of no more than 12mph, in accordance with National Highways Special Order legislation.
Movements are further restricted to daytime on Sundays only, which helps reduce traffic impact and maintain safe operating conditions.
Along the route, some street furniture including items such as illuminated bollards and traffic signals, will temporarily be removed to allow the load to pass safely.
These works are carried out in advance wherever possible and reinstated immediately after the convoy has passed. In a small number of cases, temporary replacements may be installed and permanent furniture restored shortly after.
The transport will be powered by two 250-tonne capacity tractor units, with a 4–5 person crew operating the trailer and managing ground safety. Their role includes monitoring tight turns and manoeuvring the equipment safely.
This operation is being delivered in close coordination with Norfolk County Council, Norfolk and Suffolk Police, and National Highways, with significant planning undertaken to limit inconvenience to residents and road users.
