Residents, property owners and local history enthusiasts are being invited to take part in two specialist heritage courses taking place at the Swaffham Assembly Rooms on 23 September 2026.
The courses, delivered by heritage experts from Place Services, form part of the Swaffham – A Historic Market Town project and are designed to help people better understand, preserve and research historic buildings. The initiative supports the town’s ongoing commitment to protecting its rich architectural heritage while encouraging greater appreciation of the buildings that make Swaffham unique.
The first session, “Living with Heritage Assets: How to Understand and Navigate the Planning System,” will run from 9.30am to 12.30pm. Participants will gain practical insight into the planning system, conservation principles and the reasons why historic buildings receive protection. The course will also cover building repairs, maintenance and how to ensure historic properties remain in good condition for future generations.
In the afternoon, from 1.30pm to 4.30pm, attendees can join “House History: Researching and Understanding Your Historic Building.” This course will explore the tools and resources available for uncovering the history of historic properties, including historic maps, photographs, archives and character appraisals. The session will also demonstrate how historical research can support applications for listed building consent.
Both courses will be led by Tim Murphy IHBC MCIfA, Historic Environment Manager at Place Services, one of the leading public sector providers of environmental consultancy services.
With tickets priced at just £4 per course, the sessions offer an affordable opportunity for homeowners, heritage enthusiasts and anyone interested in local history to learn from an experienced conservation specialist.
These courses have been subsidised through the Swaffham – A Historic Market Town project, helping to make heritage knowledge more accessible and supporting the long-term preservation of the town’s historic character.
