Historic Buildings Courses – Swaffham

Do you own a historic property, live in a conservation area, or simply have an interest in Swaffham’s rich architectural heritage? Join us for a day of expert-led courses designed to help you better understand, care for, and research historic buildings.

Subsidised through the Swaffham – A Historic Market Town project, these courses aim to increase knowledge of heritage buildings while supporting the preservation of the town’s unique character.

Morning Course
Living with Heritage Assets: How to Understand and Navigate the Planning System
Time: 9:30am – 12:30pm
Cost: £4

This practical session will explain how the planning system affects historic buildings and introduce key principles of conservation, restoration, and preservation. Participants will learn why certain buildings are protected, how to approach repairs and maintenance, and what is required when planning changes to a heritage property.

Afternoon Course
House History: Researching and Understanding Your Historic Building
Time: 1:30pm – 4:30pm
Cost: £4

Discover how to uncover the story of your property. This session will guide participants through a range of research sources, including historic maps, photographs, archives, and character appraisals. It will also explore how historical research can support applications for listed building consent.

Course Leader
Both sessions will be led by Tim Murphy IHBC MCIfA, Historic Environment Manager at Place Services, a leading public sector provider of environmental consultancy services.
