Swaffham will welcome a unique opportunity for anyone interested in heritage, architecture, and traditional building techniques, as a specialist course comes to the town this June.
The one-day course, Investigating Rare Building Types and Heritage Skills, will be led by heritage building expert Joe Orsi of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB). It will take place at St Peter & St Paul Church, Swaffham, offering participants both practical learning and an opportunity to explore the town’s historic built environment.
The course is designed to introduce participants to the traditional materials, methods, and craftsmanship used in historic and vernacular buildings. It will also examine how these structures were originally constructed and the approaches used today to conserve and care for them.
A key feature of the day will include a guided walk around Swaffham, allowing attendees to observe local examples of historic architecture and rare building types in situ. This will help bring the subject to life and provide a deeper understanding of the town’s architectural heritage.
The course is suitable for a wide range of participants, from those with a general interest in local history and heritage to professionals working in conservation, construction, or related fields. No prior specialist knowledge is required, making it accessible to beginners while still offering valuable insight for those already working in the sector.
Places are limited and must be booked in advance.
